USS Scorpion SUBLOSS SUBSUNK
The USS Scorpion (SSN-589) was a Skipjack-class nuclear submarine of the United States Navy that tragically sank on May 22, 1968, with the loss of all 99 crew members. The submarine was returning to its home port in Norfolk, Virginia, after a deployment in the Mediterranean. The exact cause of the sinking remains uncertain, though theories range from an internal explosion to mechanical failure or involvement in Cold War espionage activities. The wreckage was discovered in October 1968 at a depth of 9,800 feet in the Atlantic Ocean. The loss of the Scorpion remains one of the most mysterious and somber incidents in U.S. naval history.

    Your explanation of the BQR-21 sonar was not correct. You were describing the BQQ-4 sonar the operator was sitting in front of. It has the wheel. The console to the left of the operator is the BQR -21, it use a joystick to steer the bug to listen and has a waterfall display. Come on Sonarman….

    I think the freedom class need a refit but other one maybe too complex to fix. They should refit ship to attack small attack craft. which are so small that it too expensive to take them out with missiles. so speed is important if this ship is fighting in guns range of small boats. If ship too slow then fast attack boat can out run you and stay out of gun range.

    What happens when nuclear sub is lost, will they try to recover the reactor part at least, and if they can’t recover it, was there any type safety measures put in so would not have a melt down on seas floor? Or was reactor even big enough to cause a big issue if it were to melt down, or could it even melt down on sea floor? I assume it could.

    Hey Jive! On the Off chance you're still in the chat on such a "old" video, I just a a mini epiphany. The Italian FREMM is 475 Ft, the Constellation is 495 Ft, the Flight 2 Burke is 510 Ft. They ALL have a with of 65 Ft. The Fremm Comes with a bow mounted sonar. SO, For the Constipation, Keep the FREMM hull / internals AS IS, then Stretch it to 510 Ft, ( add a internal racquetball court or something ) And drip the superstructure of a Flight 2 Burke on it? Yes, you need to make things line up, But Steel is cheap, and Air is free, it's the systems that are expensive. This simplifies the design process, and Triples the VLS. Or, if you can't stretch it, lose the forward VLS, and you still have the aft 64 pack of VLS between the helo hangers. Served on Burk's, Tyco's and Perry's. Thanks for your time.

Then a Helo from one of the Soviet ships dropped a torpedo on them. May they rest in peace. I know I have read of the families waiting for hours past the expected arrival at the port to greet them. I hope they can have some peace now that she has been found

    It is a rant, but a completely valid one - makes your blood boil at the incompetence and waste leading to massive cost and time overruns. Looks like the US Navy is guilty here of the same thing our Aussie Navy has been chastised for in the recent Defence Strategic Review (DSR) - needing a ship design quickly, a valid design already exists but let's make heaps of unnecessary changes trying to make an "exquisite design" rather than get something useful in the water to fill a gap and maybe upgrade it later (ensuring there is space/capacity for upgrading of course).

    The USS Arkansas, CGN-41, did have a helo hanger. The metal plates covering the elevator would fold up like an accordion, then the elevator would rise to be even with the deck. Then it was ready for the helicopter to land. Also, I believe that the DLGN stands for Destroyer Leader Guided Missle Nuclear.

    I have a question about the technical brief that you gave at the beginning. You said that these early towed arrays had to be mounted and removed by a tug and they couldn't be retracted by the sub in the field. What was procedure if the sub had to go evasive? Was the towed array cut, or could it handle top speed maneuvers?

    8:20 -- RE: 5,500 Equivalent Full Power Hours; Well heck, quick maths demonstration time! 1 Day = 24 hours, 5 Days = 120 Hours, and 5 Days x 73 = 365. Thus 73 x 120 = Hours In a Year, plus 6. So the Core needs refueling at least once a year, eh?

    • @jamespfp
      @jamespfp День назад

      ^^ Also, DANG, how much more efficient is it on "Fuel" if it's *Not* running at Full Power? Perhaps refueling is once every 2-5 years.

    5:15 -- RE: Tugboat and Diver attach the Towed Array; OMG, I never would have guessed that the towed array didn't start out as a piece of equipment that was somehow contained and deployed by the submarine itself. And yeah, I caught on quick that it also means once connected it stayed deployed until the mission was over or an emergency situation demanded cutting it loose. Question! Could the OG towed array be detached while at sea by physically cutting it with explosive bolts and a detonator switch? Or would the sub need to deploy a diver to do that, too?

    I remember reading that the early theory about the Scorpion turning around was based on incorrect distance calculations from SOSUS. They showed her heading straight back to the US at a steady pace, then something happened, and then it started going exactly 180 degrees from its previous course, eventually imploding. Apparently those early calculations forgot to compensate for how the speed of sound changes with pressure. When re-calculated properly, the ship continued straight towards the US the whole time. The event occurred, and then the Scorpion slowly sank to crush depth (still going straight), and then imploded. This suggests that whatever the event was, it disabled a significant portion of the ship's control team. A few years ago as part of its routine visits to the wreck, the Navy recovered pieces of the ship's battery that indicated a violent explosion in the battery well. While that isn't enough evidence to determine failed TDU vs hydrogen buildup theory, it certainly is enough to disprove the hot-run torpedo theory and the torpedo tube fire theory. Although those are (now) clearly not the actual cause of the Scorpion's loss, they were real problems back then and the Navy did take action to mitigate those risks.

    This ship should never have been allowed anywhere near a war zone. Its upkeep was terrible and the crew didn't take care of the ship. The communication systems interfered with anti ship missile radar. So they would shut it down. The ship was also in a terrible physical state.The crew was mainly conscripts. They were so poorly paid. They were constantly steal things off the ship. Even the fire extinguishers had to be locked up, to their prevent theft. The conscripts would sell them in town, because they were top quality. The whole ship was like this. Their are pictures of missing and broken railings on outboard sides. This is very basic safety, which the crew could do, but wasn't done. Preventing people from falling overboard, is as basic as it gets. What a joke! The ship was doomed and I think the Ukrainians knew its state.
